I already use an encrypted backup password in Finder
If you already turned on "Encrypt local backup" in Finder, give Chatcove the same password once. Chatcove saves it on your Mac only, checks it against your backup, and reuses it from then on.
Everything stays on your Mac. The password is not sent anywhere.
What you will see
Section titled "What you will see"When Chatcove finds backup encryption already on that it did not set, it does not treat it as a failure. In one-click export it shows a calm card titled Enter your existing backup password, with the message that Chatcove needs that backup password once to read the backup, and a button Enter backup password. In step-by-step mode the Backup encryption card shows the pill Password needed.
- Click Enter backup password (one-click), or go to the Backup encryption card (step-by-step).
- Type your Finder backup password into the Backup password field.
- Click Verify.
- Chatcove does one of two things:
- If a backup of this iPhone already exists on this Mac, it checks the password against it. If it opens, you see "Saved. This password decrypts your backup." and the card becomes On and verified.
- If there is no backup on this Mac yet, it cannot check right away. It saves the password now and confirms it during the first backup. You see a note that the password will be confirmed during the first backup.
- Continue with the export. The first backup confirms the password automatically.
If the password is rejected
Section titled "If the password is rejected"- Check for typos, and for the Caps Lock key.
- In Chatcove 0.1.7 or later, if you see "That password does not open the backup on this Mac", read The saved password does not match. It explains Save anyway.
- If you cannot remember the password, see Forgot your iPhone backup password?. On the card, open I do not remember this password for the short version.
Using Finder and Chatcove together
Section titled "Using Finder and Chatcove together"Backup encryption is a setting on the iPhone, so Finder and Chatcove share it. If you later change the password in Finder, Chatcove's saved copy goes stale. The next time Chatcove tries to read a backup, Chatcove 0.1.7 or later shows Password mismatch, and you enter the new password. See The saved password does not match.
